European Folklore Week 2026 in Funchal, Madeira
Every August, the Auditório do Jardim Municipal in Funchal turns into an open-air stage for one of Madeira's most colorful cultural gatherings: European Folklore Week. The event brings together traditional dance and music ensembles from Madeira, mainland Portugal, and other European countries for five consecutive evenings of performances.
Unlike staged tourist dinner-shows, this is a genuine community event — expect authentic regional costumes, live folk instruments, and a relaxed park-like atmosphere where locals and visitors sit side by side. It also marks the informal opening of the island's biggest cultural season, leading directly into the Madeira Wine Festival later the same week.
Good to know: entry is free, seating is outdoors in the Municipal Garden, and evenings typically start after sunset. Pair a visit with dinner in Funchal's Old Town nearby.
