Festa do Senhor (Santíssimo Sacramento) – Boaventura
Every August, the village of Boaventura on Madeira's north coast turns into one big open-air party. The Festa do Senhor (Santíssimo Sacramento) is one of the region's most anticipated summer celebrations — and while it's rooted in Catholic tradition, this is far from a quiet church affair. Flags and flower garlands line the streets, fireworks light up the sky, and each evening the village square turns into a stage for live folk groups, popular Madeiran singers, and DJ sets that keep the crowd dancing well past midnight.
The rhythm shifts through the day: solemn Mass in the church, then the energy builds outside as folk musicians and singers take over, closing out with dance floors and DJ sets running into the early hours. It's a mix that pulls in locals, emigrants returning for the festa, and curious visitors alike.
