Dia da Cidade do Funchal

Every August 21st, Funchal marks the anniversary of the royal charter that elevated it to city status in 1508. The day opens with the raising of flags and the city anthem at Praça do Município, followed by a solemn mass at Igreja do Colégio. Later in the morning, a formal session at the Municipal Assembly hall honours the people and institutions who have shaped the city — including residents and staff recognised with medals for long service and civic merit.
