Lord of Miracles Festival – Machico

A deeply atmospheric religious procession in the heart of Machico, where the town commemorates the 1803 flood and the “miracle” of the recovered image of Christ. As night falls, the lights of Machico are switched off and the streets are illuminated only by candles and torches, creating a silent procession through the old town and river valley — one of Madeira’s most powerful and emotional traditional events.
👉 The highlight is the candlelight procession on 8 October, followed by religious services and a second procession on 9 October.
