São Silvestre Race — Around the City of Funchal

The São Silvestre Race — officially the Volta à Cidade do Funchal — is the oldest road race in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe, first held in Madeira in 1959. Each year on 28 December, thousands of runners take to Funchal's streets for this evening race that has become one of the region's biggest sporting traditions, closing out the year for Madeiran athletics.

The main course covers around 5,800 metres, starting on Avenida Sá Carneiro and running through downtown Funchal. The event includes an inclusive race open to wheelchair athletes, alongside the competitive road race, and is typically accompanied by a non-competitive health walk (Marcha pela Saúde) for participants who prefer to walk the route.
