Madeira Photography Museum — Atelier Vicente's
Free

Step back into the 19th century for World Photography Day at the Madeira Photography Museum — Atelier Vicente's. Over three dates in August, visitors can explore the wet collodion process — one of photography's earliest techniques, in which images are captured on glass or metal plates coated with a light-sensitive solution — through a hands-on programme led by Filipe Barroso and Vera Gonçalves of Five Historic Photography Studio.

Programme:

14 August, 2:30 PM — Talk: "From Light to Memory — 19th-century photographic processes and Madeira's photographic heritage," followed immediately by a live demonstration of the wet collodion technique. One attendee will be randomly selected to receive a free portrait session.

18–19 August, during regular museum hours — Portrait sessions in a recreated 19th-century studio, using the wet collodion process. Small fee applies; take home your own handmade photographic piece. Entry to the talk and demonstration is free. Dates: 14, 18 and 19 August 2026.
