Festa dos Fachos — Festival Histórico das Tochas de Machico 2026

One of Madeira's oldest and most visually striking traditions,the Festa dos Fachos dates back to the 16th–18th centuries, when hilltop bonfires were used to warn Machico's population of incoming pirate raids. Today, groups from different parts of the parish spend days building enormous torch structures — some over 10 meters tall — shaped like boats, crosses, chalices, and fish, using wire, nails, and burnt oil-soaked cotton.

The event takes place on the last weekend of August, coinciding with the Festa do Santíssimo Sacramento. After an evening mass, a conch shell sounds across the valley for around 30 minutes — the signal that the torches are about to be lit. Moments later, the hillsides around the Vale de Machico glow with fire as the structures burn simultaneously, a spectacle best watched from the town's viewpoints. The party continues afterward in Largo da Praça with live music, food, and drink.
