The Atlantic Festival

The Atlantic Festival is Madeira’s most spectacular fireworks celebration — a month-long event where the island’s skies are transformed into a stage of light, colour, and music.

At its heart lies the International Fireworks Competition, where teams from different countries compete every Saturday night in June, synchronising breathtaking firework displays with powerful musical scores. Each show turns the horizon over Funchal, Madeira, Portugal into a living canvas of rhythm, emotion, and explosive artistry.

Alongside the fireworks, the festival expands into a wider cultural programme that includes the Madeira Music Festival and live performances by philharmonic bands across the city. Classical concerts take place in iconic venues such as the Palácio de São Lourenço, Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, historic churches throughout Funchal, and the MUDAS Contemporary Art Museum in Calheta.

But it is the night sky that defines the experience — a sequence of dazzling shows where music and pyrotechnics merge into unforgettable moments, making the Atlantic Festival one of Europe’s most impressive fireworks events.
